Project
SV Meetcampagne emissiefactoren
Aim of this project is to carry out a measurement campaign to determine emission factors for traditional livestock housing systems to be used as reference for the Sbv innovation program. This concerns the selection of barns and installation of measurement equipment, and performing and reporting the results of the measurements.
The Ministry of LNV released on 25 May 2020 new innovation arrangements for cattle farming (dairy cattle and veal calves), pig farming and dairy goat farming, aiming to stimulate the development of new sustainable housing systems. This involves reducing emissions of methane, ammonia, odor and particulate matter, and focusing on animal welfare and air quality inside the barn by using as much reducing measures as possible. Applications may be submitted for new livestock housing concepts that meet the sustainability criteria, and get subsidy from the Ministry of LNV. This Sbv innovation program consists of three phases: 1) research and development phase to optimize the concept, 2) emission measurement phase in test compartments (livestock housing) to determine emission factors of the optimized concept, 3) investment subsidy for test compartments, depending on the achieved reduction level compared to reference housing systems.
An important starting point in the regulation is the reference level for the emission of the components to be reduced, for which the emission factor of the conventional barn design is used. During the elaboration of the regulation, it became clear from other existing research that established reference levels are no longer up to date for a number of animal categories. For methane, insufficient measurement data (using the current measurement protocol for the determination of emission factors) is available to establish emission reference levels for a number of animal categories. In order to properly implement the Sbv innovation program, a measurement campaign is therefore necessary to establish reliable reference levels for these categories. This project aims to implement a measurement campaign for to determine emission factors for CH4 and other relevant compounds (NH3, odor, particulate matter) for prioritized livestock housing systems to be used in the Sbv innovation program.
