Maartje Mulder: Ultimately, if someone were to ask whether I recommend doing a thesis at Nematology, I would answer with a 100% yes!

In September 2024, I started with my master’s thesis at the Laboratory of Nematology. My project focused on producing specific glycans in Nicotiana Benthamianafor a vaccine against liver fluke. As a medical biotechnologist, both working with plants and glycobiology were relatively new to me. This made the learning curve steep, but also very rewarding. I feel like I have learned a lot during this thesis, on both a personal and academic level!

Throughout the project, I was given the freedom to work independently, but if I needed any help, there was always someone available. My supervisors were also very supportive. I had some setbacks in the lab at the beginning, but in the end, I was able to present my thesis with results I am proud of. This taught me various things, among which the greatest is probably perseverance in research.

What I appreciated most about Nematology was the atmosphere and the people. The atmosphere was informal, and I felt no hierarchy between people. This made it very easy to connect and ask questions, not just to my supervisors but also to the rest of the department. I also really enjoyed the various social events that were organized, like lunches, drinks and the Christmas dinner. This also promoted new friendships with my fellow students.
