Evolution as a process of interactions between scales: Predicting transitions
Project description
This project within the Sectorplan Biology will study evolution on diverse scales by elucidating interactions between genes and molecules, molecules and cells and cells and organisms. The involved researchers have different backgrounds but share an interest in how evolutionary processes at different organizational levels interact.
Within this project we will create novel insight for some of these processes by combining expertise in modelling, bioinformatics and experiments. Our project will generate: 1) understanding of evolutionary effects of (super)host-driven spatial restructuring in bacteriophage-bacteria-superhost systems, 2) insight into the development of tripartite interactions between organisms of distinct biological kingdoms, and 3) knowledge of genetic switches that allow for adaptation to different habitats. Together, these findings across diverse experimental systems will be used to predict transitions in biological adaptation from genes to organisms.
