Project
Call for Partners | Gluecose: sugar-based resins
In this project, fully biobased and safe binders for wood, HPL and MDF panels will be developed. More specifically, humin-based resins will be produced from hexose-rich agricultural and food side-streams. We are looking for partners all along the value chain from feedstock suppliers to converters to adhesive producers and end users.
Wood, HPL and MDF panels are currently manufactured using thermoset resins that rely on fossil-based and harmful phenol, formaldehyde or isocyanates. In this project, fully biobased and safe resins for wood, HPL and MDF panels will be developed from carbohydrate-rich agricultural and food side-streams. Instead of targeting pure furanics from pure sugar streams, Gluecose pursues the conversion of crude hexose mixtures into water-soluble humins with optimal binder functionality.
Gluecose offers opportunities across the value chain
The Gluecose project will establish new value-chains for sugar-rich side-streams, will improve sustainable production of biobased thermoset resins and will develop 100% biobased, formaldehyde-free wood, HPL and MDF panel materials with improved end-of life options for recycling.
Partners
This project will be submitted for Dutch Top sector AgriFood subsidy, which funds 50% of the project budget. The remaining 50% is contributed by industry via in cash and in kind contributions. Total project budget will be approximately 2.0 million euro. Partner contributions will range on average between €20,000–50,000 per year. This project will have a total duration of 3 years. We are looking for industrial partners all along the value chain from feedstock suppliers to converters to adhesive producers and end users.
