Alyssa van Cleef: Overall, I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to grow, develop and learn in such a positive, open and enjoyable environment
In May 2024, I started my master thesis at the department of Nematology. My goal was to research the effect of soil biodiversity in intercropping and monocropping on the progression and efficacy of the soil-borne fungus Rhizoctonia solani. This was done by growing Brassica oleracea and Allium fistulosum plants in a greenhouse, using different types of soil and inoculating the plants with R. solani. Among others, I collected multiple soil samples, which I analyzed with qPCR to determine the presence and progression of R. solani.
During this thesis project, I have learned important skills in writing, statistical analysis in R and lab skills, that I will surely carry with me throughout my studies and my future career. Additionally, I have been able to develop my abilities in critical thinking, which allowed me to handle my work with more confidence.
Thinking about my time at the department of Nematology, I had an extremely positive experience. From day one, I felt very welcomed and supported. I had great and helpful supervisors, who have helped me develop valuable skills, but also created a warm, enjoyable and open atmosphere that allowed me to express myself freely. I was given many opportunities to ask question and contribute to the project, which allowed me to gain more confidence in my capabilities. Overall, I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to grow, develop and learn in such a positive, open and enjoyable environment.
